The VANA Newsagent of the Year Awards comprises two categories; one for Retail and one for Distribution, and Award recipients are selected via a combination of sponsor and industry nominations and self nominations.

Award sponsors have their representatives and field agents score newsagents according to specific criteria -, and a representative from each sponsor organisation sits on the judging panel.

The sponsors of the Distribution category (HWT and The AGE) of the Award each submit nominees within the Distribution and Retail categories and the remaining sponsors present nominees each for the Retail category only.

Newsagents are also given the opportunity to self nominate.  A comprehensive self nomination form is available on the VANA website for completion

Self nomination forms received by VANA will be forwarded to the judging panel for assessment prior to the preliminary judging day scheduled on November 14th, 2008 where the list of nominees and the confirmation of the six finalists in each category is judged.

The winners in each category will then be confirmed at a subsequent meeting scheduled on January 9th, 2009, allowing each sponsor to analyse, review and nominate the winners.

The finalists and winners of the Retail and Distribution categories of the Newsagent of the Year Awards are announced at VANA Excellence Award Celebration Event.

The 2009 award recipients will go on to represent Victoria at the 2009 National Newsagent of the Year Awards.  Costs participation in the national awards program are covered by VANA to the value of $4000.00.

Historically, recipients of the Victorian Newsagent of the Year award have been very successful in the national awards, and this reflects not only the high standards required to achieve winner status, but also the quality of the judging process. And 2008 was again an extremely good year for the industry as Melbourne Central Newsagency, was crowned the Australian Newsagency of the Year – Distribution! and Williamstown News and Lotto, crowned the Australian Newsagency of the Year - Retail!
